What are controls on an FLHA?

On an FLHA, or Field Level Hazard Assessment, a control is what the crew will actually do about a hazard. "Be careful" is a reminder. It does not say what anyone will do.

One way to write a control

The task: Moving boxes from the loading area into room 3 using a cart

The hazard: Water on the floor in room 3. Someone could slip.

Not enough

Watch the floor

Why: It is a reminder. It doesn't say what the crew will do about the water.

Better

Have the water cleaned up before moving the boxes in.

Why: It names a planned action. The crew still talks about who will do it, and checks that it happened.
